‘Geography is not confined to providing historical form with a substance and variable places. It is not merely physical and human but mental, like the landscape. Geography wrests history from the cult of necessity in order to stress the irreducibility of contingency.’ – Giles Deleuze & Felix Guattari (1994) What Is Philosophy?
Dr Ben Garlick – Senior Lecturer in Geography – York St John University
Since January 2017 I have been part of the Geography department at York St John University, first as Lecturer then, from July 2021, as Senior Lecturer. As well as being responsible for delivering range of undergraduate modules – exploring topics as diverse as landscape, cultures of nature, conservation , map-making, the history of geographical knowledge, and qualitative research methods – I also lead our recently validated MA in Environment & Social Justice, which will commence teaching in September 2023 (details here).
For more information you can check out my York St John webpage here.
Prior to moving to York, I was based at the University of Edinburgh (2011-2016), where I carried out my Masters and PhD research into the history of conservation in Scotland. In February 2017 I was awarded my PhD – supervised by the fantastic Dr Fraser MacDonald and inimitable Dr Eric Laurier – following the successful defense of my thesis, entitled: ‘Osprey Involvements: Historical Animal Geographies of Extinction and Return’. More information regarding my past and present research interests can be found on the page ‘Research…’. I’ve also prepared an accessible summary of my PhD thesis, which is available to read here.
